2026 buyer guide · Los Angeles SEO

How to choose an SEO agency in Los Angeles without buying the pitch.

Score every agency on the same evidence: verified outcomes, page-level diagnosis, technical control, a legitimate authority plan, local accuracy, commercial measurement, and ownership of the assets you pay for.

Written and reviewed by Ori Raham, founder of Spec Social. Published July 22, 2026. The same standard is applied to Spec below.

The decision rule

Evidence before confidence.

The right SEO agency should be able to explain what is blocking the site, which pages should win which searches, what will be changed, where authority will come from, and how a ranking will be connected to a qualified lead.

Do not score promises. Score evidence already supplied, specific work written into the proposal, and ownership written into the contract. If an item is “coming later,” leave it at zero until it exists.

Fast disqualification

Remove any candidate that guarantees a number-one ranking, refuses to explain its link methods, cannot identify who will own your accounts, or presents another company's work as its own. Google's own hiring guidance warns against guarantees and secretive tactics.

The 100-point scorecard

Weight what changes the outcome.

Award partial points only when the evidence is partially complete. Keep notes and links in the worksheet so a polished sales call cannot overwrite what was actually verified.

AreaWeightFull-credit evidenceZero-credit evidence
Verified proof20Named, client-approved SEO cases show the starting point, work performed, date range, business outcome, and a contactable reference.Logo walls, anonymous percentages, traffic screenshots without conversions, or results that cannot be tied to the agency.
Market and page-level diagnosis15The proposal maps priority query groups to specific URLs, names the current winners, explains the gap, and separates commercial from informational intent.A generic audit score, a keyword dump, or the same monthly package offered before the agency has examined the site and search results.
Technical SEO control15The team can diagnose indexation, canonicals, redirects, rendering, internal links, structured data, sitemaps, performance, and release validation.Technical work is limited to installing a plugin, changing title tags, or forwarding unexplained tool exports.
Authority and off-site plan15The proposal names realistic sources of relevant mentions and links—clients, partners, associations, directories, research, experts, and publications.A promised quantity of backlinks with no source, editorial standard, relevance test, or explanation of how links will be earned.
Measurement and commercial accountability10Reporting connects landing pages and queries to qualified calls, forms, bookings, pipeline, or revenue, with a documented baseline.Success means impressions, aggregate traffic, domain scores, or a ranking screenshot with no lead-quality or revenue context.
Los Angeles local and entity signals10The plan covers Business Profile ownership, category and service accuracy, review operations, citation consistency, service areas, and locally relevant proof. The agency treats local SEO as adding city names to copied pages or submitting the business to hundreds of low-quality directories.
Ownership, access, and contract terms10The client owns the site, content, analytics, Search Console, Business Profile, call tracking, and ad accounts, with exit terms in writing. The agency controls critical accounts, leases the website, withholds work on exit, or will not document cancellation and handoff terms.
Communication and operating cadence5A named senior owner explains decisions, records shipped changes, reports blockers, and sets a predictable review cadence. The salesperson disappears after signing, work passes through layers, or reporting cannot explain what changed and why.
Total100A high score improves decision quality. It does not guarantee a ranking, lead volume, or revenue result.

The interview

Ten questions that expose the operating system.

Ask every candidate the same questions. The useful part is not the answer alone; it is the evidence they are willing to put behind it.

01

Which three search opportunities would you prioritize first, and why?

Listen for

A reasoned choice based on buyer intent, current visibility, competition, economics, and the page that should own each query group.

Request this

A one-page query-to-URL map showing the current page, proposed page, intent, and first action.

02

Show me a result that can be verified beyond your own website.

Listen for

A named client, clear baseline, dated result, scope of work, and permission to contact the reference.

Request this

The public case, reporting excerpt, and client reference—not an untraceable graph.

03

What is technically preventing this site from competing today?

Listen for

Specific observations about crawlability, indexation, canonicals, architecture, rendering, templates, internal links, or page experience.

Request this

The affected URLs, evidence, business consequence, and proposed validation method.

04

Exactly where will legitimate authority come from?

Listen for

A source-by-source plan tied to the business: clients, vendors, associations, local organizations, research, expert contributions, or relevant media.

Request this

A 90-day opportunity list with target type, angle, owner, and pass/fail quality criteria.

05

How will you distinguish a qualified lead from more traffic?

Listen for

Form, call, booking, CRM, and revenue tracking with agreed definitions for qualified, disqualified, duplicate, and existing-customer activity.

Request this

A sample report that follows one landing page from impression to qualified opportunity.

06

What will you change in our Google Business Profile and local record?

Listen for

Ownership first, then accurate categories, services, location or service-area treatment, photos, reviews, responses, and consistent business facts.

Request this

A current-state listing inventory and the exact fields that need confirmation from the owner.

07

How do SEO, AI Overviews, and ChatGPT visibility connect in your plan?

Listen for

One crawlable, evidence-rich source system—not a secret AI schema or a separate bundle of mass-produced pages.

Request this

The fixed buyer questions to monitor, source gaps found, and pages responsible for answering them.

08

What do you need access to, and who owns it if we leave?

Listen for

Least-privilege access during evaluation, client-owned production accounts, documented credentials, and a clean offboarding process.

Request this

An access matrix and ownership clause covering the site, domains, content, data, tracking, listings, and advertising accounts.

09

What should happen in the first 30, 60, and 90 days?

Listen for

Sequenced fixes and releases based on dependencies—not a promise that every month contains the same number of blogs and links.

Request this

A dated implementation plan with owners, dependencies, deliverables, and validation steps.

10

What would make you tell us not to hire you?

Listen for

Clear fit limits, economic constraints, missing internal resources, unrealistic timelines, or another channel that should be fixed before SEO.

Request this

The assumptions behind the proposal and the conditions that would change scope, price, or the recommendation.

Red flags

Eight reasons to stop the process.

A guaranteed number-one ranking

No agency controls Google. A guarantee usually means the query is trivial, the definition is being manipulated, or the provider is ignoring the risk of tactics it will not explain.

Proof that cannot be inspected

Do not award points for unlabeled charts, anonymous percentage lifts, a client logo with no described engagement, or a result whose time period and baseline are missing.

A backlink count sold as the strategy

Ten relevant editorial mentions can matter more than thousands of automated links. Require the source type, relevance standard, acquisition method, and rejection rules.

Content volume without an intent map

Publishing more pages can create cannibalization and low-value inventory. Every planned page should have a buyer, purpose, primary intent, and internal route to a commercial page.

A private dashboard as the only record

The underlying Search Console, analytics, CRM, call data, and release history should remain accessible in client-owned accounts.

Local pages with no local usefulness

Replacing one city name with another is not local expertise. A Los Angeles page should contain distinct services, proof, logistics, market context, and next steps for Los Angeles buyers.

AI visibility sold as a secret trick

Google says its normal technical and content requirements still apply to AI features. Ask how the work improves crawlability, evidence, source quality, entity clarity, and buyer usefulness.

Full account access before the evaluation earns it

A prospective agency can usually diagnose with public information and read-only access. Production access should be scoped, approved, and logged after engagement terms are clear.

Before you sign

Put the evidence in the room.

These ten items turn a sales conversation into an engagement you can inspect and manage.

  1. 01The final query-to-page map for the first priority services.
  2. 02A technical issue register with affected URLs, severity, owner, and validation method.
  3. 03A 90-day authority plan naming opportunity types and quality standards.
  4. 04One complete, verifiable case relevant to the proposed work.
  5. 05Two client references whose scope resembles yours.
  6. 06A sample report connecting organic landing pages to qualified leads.
  7. 07The account, asset, data-ownership, and offboarding clauses.
  8. 08The first 90 days of deliverables, dependencies, and decision dates.
  9. 09The definition of a qualified lead and the baseline used for comparison.
  10. 10Every material assumption that can change price, timing, or scope.

Spec under the same microscope

What you can verify—and what you should not assume.

This is the public record as of July 22, 2026. Missing evidence stays missing; it is not replaced with a confident sentence.

Visible now

  • A named founder and direct accountability for strategy, implementation, and reporting.
  • Named client relationships that can be inspected on the client relationships page.
  • A public starting price, month-to-month terms, and stated client ownership of accounts, site, and data.
  • Public service pages describing technical, local, content, authority, AI-search, and conversion work.

Do not award yet

  • Published, client-approved SEO outcome cases with a baseline, date range, and commercial result.
  • A deep body of independent, verified agency reviews.
  • Externally verified SEO awards, certifications, or partner credentials.
  • Any guarantee that Spec will make a client number one. Spec does not make that guarantee.

If you compare Spec with another agency, use the downloadable worksheet exactly as written. Ask Spec to earn every point with an artifact, reference, contract term, or specific proposal—not with the fact that Spec authored the worksheet.

Questions

Choosing an agency, answered.

What is a good score on this SEO agency worksheet?

Treat 80 or more as shortlist quality only when the high-value points are supported by evidence. A proposal can sound complete and still score poorly if proof, technical diagnosis, authority sources, ownership, or measurement cannot be verified. A score is a decision aid, not a guarantee of future rankings.

Should I only hire an SEO agency located in Los Angeles?

No. Location can help with local context and direct accountability, but verified results, technical capability, communication, and fit matter more than an office address. If Los Angeles visibility is the goal, require a concrete local-search plan regardless of where the team sits.

How many SEO agencies should I interview?

Three to five serious candidates is usually enough to compare diagnoses without turning the process into a month of repetitive sales calls. Give each agency the same business context, access level, questions, and scoring worksheet.

Can I ask an agency to do an audit before signing?

Yes. Google recommends carefully considering what an audit includes and limiting access at the evaluation stage. A useful audit should identify affected URLs, realistic opportunities, risks, the work required, and how each change will be validated.

Should an SEO agency guarantee rankings or leads?

No. Google explicitly warns that no one can guarantee a number-one ranking. An agency can commit to deliverables, quality controls, transparent measurement, and a decision cadence, but search positions and customer behavior remain outside its control.

How do I compare a freelancer with a larger SEO agency?

Use the same evidence standard. A freelancer may offer senior attention and speed; a larger agency may offer more specialist coverage and redundancy. Score the actual people assigned, their access to required skills, the operating cadence, proof, and ownership terms—not the headcount alone.
