Search, without the acronym fog

SEO vs AEO vs GEO: what each one actually does.

SEO earns visibility in ranked results. AEO earns selection as a direct answer. GEO earns citations inside generated responses. They are different outcomes built on the same foundation—and a business should not have to coordinate three agencies to get them.

The short answer

One search system. Three ways to be chosen.

SEO, AEO, and GEO are not rival channels. Search engines and AI assistants all need to discover a source, understand what it says, decide whether it is trustworthy, and match it to a question. The presentation changes—ranked link, direct answer, or generated citation—but the underlying record is shared.

That is why Spec treats them as one operation: technical SEO creates access, content creates the answer, entity work removes ambiguity, and off-site authority gives independent systems a reason to trust the claim.

What to prioritize

Do not buy three strategies for one search problem.

01

Build the SEO foundation

Fix indexation, canonicals, site architecture, priority service pages, local signals, measurement, and the authority needed to be discoverable at all.

02

Make every money page answer-ready

State what you do, who it is for, where you do it, what it costs, and how it differs—in language a buyer and a machine can both extract.

03

Test generated answers

Use a fixed set of buying questions to find citation gaps, improve the sources behind them, and measure whether visibility is actually changing.

Questions

The acronyms, answered.

Is AEO replacing SEO?

No. AEO depends on many of the same foundations as SEO: crawlable pages, clear information architecture, useful content, recognizable entities, and authority. AEO adds direct-answer formatting and testing across answer surfaces, but it does not remove the need to rank and be discoverable.

Are AEO and GEO the same thing?

They overlap, but they are not identical. AEO is the broader practice of earning direct-answer visibility. GEO focuses on generated responses and citations from AI systems. In practice, most businesses should run the work together because the same page can support classic search, an answer box, and an AI citation.

What is LLM SEO?

LLM SEO focuses on how conversational assistants understand and recommend a brand. It includes making business facts extractable, improving the sources assistants rely on, resolving conflicting entity information, and testing the questions buyers ask those models.

Which should a small business prioritize first?

Start with the SEO foundation: indexation, service pages, local signals, reviews, tracking, and content that answers real buying questions. Then add AEO and GEO testing to those same priority pages. Buying a separate AI-search program before the underlying site is sound usually creates more labels than results.

Can one page rank in Google and appear in AI answers?

Yes. A well-built page can rank organically, support a direct answer, and be cited by an AI system. The page needs a clear purpose, direct claims supported by detail, strong internal context, consistent entity information, and enough authority for independent systems to trust it.

How should AEO and GEO results be measured?

Use a fixed set of buyer questions and re-test them across the same systems. Track mentions, linked and unlinked citations, the competitors selected, organic visibility, and conversions. Because generated answers can vary, trends across repeated tests matter more than one screenshot.

Be found. Be cited. Be chosen.

Spec runs SEO, AEO, and GEO as one accountable search operation.
